An SMS gateway is a transfer point handling SMS messages on their route from a source to their destination. It is a node within a network that interfaces with other networks to transfer messages. Where necessary, the gateway will also translate message data in those cases where the other network does not share the same protocol. For example, a gateway might translate messages sent in HTTP into SMPP.
